The Heriz Gallery Story

“We have helped thousands of homeowners, corporates, hotels, architects and interior designers across the African continent find the perfect rug”

Javad Shokouhbin

Heriz Gallery is owned by Javad Shokouhbin and Majid Saffari who were both born in Iran (former Persia). Steeped in knowledge of Persian culture, they have a deep and sincere passion for the famous Persian rug industry, that is thousands of years old.

The store has its roots in Javad’s father’s successful antique and Persian rug business, that he started in Persia in 1950. In the mid 1990’s – the birth of the new South Africa – Javad and Majid opened Heriz Gallery in Johannesburg.

In the past 30 years, they have kept a keen, professional eye on the massive growth of the global rug industry and trends. Read more about their insights regarding current rug industry trends here.

Today, they hold one of the largest collections under one roof in South Africa. Customers are spoilt for choice with more than 10,000 rugs in store. From the most affordable to the finest antique pieces, there is a beautiful rug to meet everyone’s expectations and needs.

Heriz Gallery imports rugs from key countries that were part of or influenced by the former ancient Persian Empire such as Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, and India.

Heriz Gallery’s services have expanded to include refurbishing and professional cleaning of rugs, custom-made rugs, consulting, and the sale of ornaments and original art from selected South African artists.

Bringing generations of knowledge to the market, Heriz Gallery delivers expert advice, fair prices, and personal service to its many customers, who seek beauty and quality from a trusted retailer.

“We only curate the best possible rugs from reputable weavers and manufacturers for our collections. Variety and quality are a given for our customers.”

Majid Saffari

Why we call ourselves Heriz Gallery?

Gallery

Rugs are works of art. We curate and display beautiful pieces.

Weaving a handmade rug starts from a drawing that is developed from the inspiration created in the individual weaver’s mind.

Machine-made rugs also require creative inspiration. For these rugs, a designer uses modern methods, materials, and technology to produce beautiful rugs in either classic Persian or contemporary designs.

Heriz

Heriz is a town in the western part of Iran that sits on a large deposit of copper. Traces of copper in the water and soil cause the sheep to produce thick, warm, high-quality wool that is not common in any other area.

Heriz rugs are highly durable and last for generations. The Heriz design is recognisable by a large central medallion in a ‘square-diamond’ shape. The combination of floral and geometric patterns makes these rugs work in all kinds of rooms and types of decor.
